Elisabeth Pepys

Elisabeth Pepys ( born October 23, 1640 or in the area of Bideford, Devon, England; † November 10, 1669; born: Elisabeth de St Michel ) was the wife of Samuel Pepys Diary author.

Life

Elisabeth Pepys was the daughter of Alexandre de St. Michel, a Frenchman who had converted to Protestantism as a young man, and his wife Dorothea, a British woman.

Your early youth she spent at home in England, and later spent some time in France and other European countries. At the age of 15 she married the young English financial staff Samuel Pepys, who held after the restoration of the Stuart monarchy several important posts in the naval administration, and occupied a prominent position in the political, scientific and social life of his home city of London. In his famous diary, which was not found until more than 100 years after his death, he held the community life and social advancement of the couple over a period of almost 10 years.

Elizabeth Pepys died, probably of typhoid fever, after returning from a trip to France, she had undertaken towards the end of 1669 with her husband. It was - like 34 years later Samuel Pepys - buried in the nave of St Olave Hart Street in the City of London, where to this day is a bust of her.
