Elizabeth Granowska

Elizabeth of Pilitza (z Polish Elżbieta Granowska Pileckich; * 1372, † 1420 in Kraków ) was by marriage to Władysław II Jagiello from 1417 Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania. She was born the only child of Otto von Pilitza, the voivode of Sandomierz, and his wife Jadwiga Melsztyńska. When her father's death in 1384 she inherited large estates, including Pilitza and Łańcut.

Life

She was first married with three Polish nobles, Wisel Czambor, Jańczyk Jańczykowicz Hińczyński and Wincenty Granovsky (the marriages with Wisel and Jańczyk are historically disputed), her marriage to her third husband Granovsky lasted 13 years and she had with him two sons and two daughters. Granovsky died on 12 December 1410 and left a widow Elizabeth.

On May 2, 1417, she married in Sanok the past year also widowed Polish King Władysław II Jagiello and was crowned Queen of Poland in the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow on May 19. The marriage met with fierce resistance from the Polish nobility. Some said that the already 65 -year-old king, who at that time had only one surviving daughter, would have a younger wife to take than the already 45 -year-old Elizabeth.

In 1419, Elizabeth fell ill with tuberculosis and died in 1420 in Krakow. She was buried in Wawel Cathedral.
