Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook, released in 1956 is a jazz album by Ella Fitzgerald with songs by Cole Porter.

Background

It was Ella Fitzgerald's first album for the newly founded by Norman Granz Verve Records. The recordings were made in February and March 1956 in the Capital Studios in Hollywood. Buddy Bregman arranged the title and conducted the studio orchestra.

The album opened the Songbook series of eight albums with songs by various composers, which are collectively known as the Great American Songbook and the title of Fitzgerald First Lady of Song earned.

Norman Granz, the Fitzgerald's manager and producer of many of her albums was visited Cole Porter at the Waldorf -Astoria Hotel and played him the whole album. Porter said only: My, what marvelous diction did girl has. By the choice of Cole Porter as an introduction to the Songbook series, the audience was attentive both to Porter, as a source of great music, as well as Ella Fitzgerald singing inexhaustible resources.

The album was recorded in 2003 as one of 50 albums in the national register recording the Library of Congress, a list of recordings with cultural, historical or aesthetic value and reference to the United States.
