Ellen Gates Starr

Ellen Gates Starr ( * March 19, 1859 near Laona in the U.S. state of Illinois, † February 10, 1940 in Suffern, New York) was an American social reformer and pioneer of the settlement movement.

Since graduating from Rockford Women's Seminar (1877 /78) was Ellen Starr friends with Jane Addams, with the 1888 they undertook a trip to Europe, while the Toynbee Hall met in London. Together with Addams, she founded after her return, the Hull House in Chicago.
