Elongate carpet shark

Parascyllium elongatum is a shark from the family of collar carpet sharks. The species was described in 2008 based on a specimen that was in the stomach of a 50 meters depth caught off the west coast of Australia tope shark ( Galeorhinus galeus ).

Features

The holotype, a female, was 42.1 inches long. From other species of the genus Parascyllium to Parascyllium different elongatum by the especially slender, almost eel-like body, which is body height only about 5.5 % of the body length, the very small head, which is less than 13% of the body length long and the small eyes, whose diameter reaches only 8% of head length. The pectoral fins and dorsal fins are small, the low dorsal fins have rounded tips. Parascyllium elongatum is colored gray. Dark bands, which are separated by diagonal rows of white dots show up on the sides.

Distribution and habitat

Parascyllium is only known from the west coast of Australia (Western Australia) and so far only by a single specimen elongatum.

Way of life

Over the life of the species is no information. She is probably oviparous ( oviparous ) and feeds on small fish and invertebrates.

Relation to man

The International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN ), the type corresponding to the missing data as "data deficient" on its list of endangered species.
