Parascyllium

Parascyllium ferrugineum

Parascyllium is a genus of the superorder Real sharks and the family of the collar carpet sharks. It contains five species that occur around the Australian continent in limited areas of distribution.

Features

In all species of the genus are small and very slender, elongated species. They reach a maximum body length of 89-90 inches and are fully grown significantly larger than the closely related Cirrhoscyllium species. The body bottom is flattened in more typical of demersal shark species manner. The two dorsal fins are very far behind, the first dorsal fin arises in all types behind the pelvic fins and the second well behind the approach of the anal fin.

Compared to the closely related species of the genus Cirrhoscyllium possible to differentiate Parascyllium species by the absence of barbels at the throat. In addition, the species of the genus Parascyllium are generally characterized by a distinct pattern with numerous spots and dots while at Cirrhoscyllium species occur only saddles.

Dissemination

The five species of the genus Parascyllium have a limited distribution area in the coastal area of Australia respectively. So the collar band Teppichhai comes only on the east coast of Australia before while the rust -colored Teppichhai and the neck band Teppichhai along the southern coast and Tasmania to live. Parascyllium sparsimaculatum is known only from a very narrow deep sea area off Western Australia.

With the exception of Parascyllium sparsimaculatum they live on the Pacific continental shelf rocky reefs at depths up to 180 m. Parascyllium sparsimaculatum is a deep-water species, which is found at depths of 245-435 meters, and is so far known only in three individuals.

Way of life

Over the life of the five species are currently very little information. They are nocturnal and hide during the day in caves. They are probably all kinds oviparous ( oviparous ) and they feed on small fish and invertebrates.

Endangering
