Collared Teppichhai ( Parascyllium variolatum )

The neck band Teppichhai ( Parascyllium variolatum, formerly variolatum also Hemiscyllium, another synonym Parascyllium nuchalis ) is a real one shark from the family of the collar carpet sharks. He lives off the southern coast of Australia, mainly between the Australian mainland and Tasmania, as well as off the southwest coast.

Features

The species is very elongated and slender, and reaches a length of up to 91 cm. The muzzle is short and broadly rounded, the head flat, with slit- shaped eyes, and without barbels. The anterior dorsal fin is well behind the pelvic fins, anal fins well ahead of the second dorsal fin. The color is light to dark brown with black and white spots all over the body and large black spots on all fins. At the level of the gill type carries a broad, black band with small white spots, which it owes its name.

Way of life

The neck band Teppichhai lives on the continental shelf at depths up to 180 m over sandy ground, in rocky reefs, kelp forests and seagrass beds. He is like most sharks a predator and feeds mostly on invertebrates. Young fish like to hide under rocks and ground debris. It is oviparous and harmless to humans.
