Elonidae

Elona quimperiana

The Elonidae are a small family from the suborder of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ). It consists now of only two extant, monotypic genera that are native to northern Spain and western France. A third genus from South Eastern Europe is also provided by some authors to do so. However, quite a number of fossil representatives are added, which are known since the Eocene.

Features

The housings are strongly flattened to almost planispiral. The shell is relatively thin and translucent. The housing is 1-4 lighter radial lines, which are followed by darker radial lines. The umbilicus is open and cylindrical. The dart sac opens into the vagina, a Neophor does not exist. The two mucus glands are club-shaped and occur above the arrow sac into the vagina.

Occurrence, lifestyle and dissemination

The modern species of the family live exclusively in northern Spain, northern Portugal, the French-Spanish Western Pyrenees and Brittany. Soosia occurs in Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria. The fossil representatives are known from Central Europe.

System

The family is divided by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) into two subfamilies. The subfamily Klikiinae it contains predominantly fossil representatives. Soosia Hesse, 1918 could be a still extant representatives of this group, but is poorly known.
