EMD F2

The EMD F2 series was a diesel locomotive class of the U.S. manufacturer Electro -Motive Division (EMD ). It can be regarded as a transitional type between the EMD FT and EMD F3.

History of development

With the looming victory of the United States in World War II the production limits by the U.S. Warboard were gradually relaxed. In August 1945, EMD introduced the railway companies a four-part demonstration unit of the designated successor as E2 series for EMD FT. This was equipped with an advanced diesel engine the EMD 567B series and made 1100 KW ( 1500 hp SAE ). EMD offered the railway companies this unit to test drive. Delivery problems with the new generator of type D12 meant that the EMD machinery while surrendering for a transition period with the new EMD 567B engine, but the old generator D8 from the EMD FT. The power of the motor needed to prevent overloading of the generator 1 000 kW ( 1350 hp SAE ) can be throttled. As the end of 1946 was the production version of the D12 is available, the production of EMD F2 after only 5 months was set in December 1946 in favor of the EMD F3.

Technology

The EMD FT series work, like almost all locomotives in North America, after the diesel-electric principle. The diesel motor drives a generator in this case, which in turn supplies the drive motors with electrical energy. About this intermediate step, a torque conversion is achieved.

The locomotive body of the vehicles matched the heard of the E- Series and EMD FT -known carbody design. Here presented the sidewalls a self-supporting enclosure for all units inside Measurement with a walkway to the right and left of the center of the vehicle the execution of maintenance work during the trip was possible.

From the FT you took over the design of the Bulldog nose. Compared to the predecessor model, the locomotives have only two exhausts.
