Emergency brake (train)

An emergency brake is a technical device for triggering an immediate braking to avert danger. So trains or elevators for example, are equipped with emergency brakes that can be operated by passengers. The triggering of the emergency brake without a valid reason is an offense in most cases, since it can come in transport by the abrupt deceleration to endangerment of the other passengers and other road users and traffic is delayed. Most emergency brakes are provided with a locking mechanism that allows the re-opening after a release or acknowledgment.

Emergency brake on the railroad

Before the introduction of the automatic brake

Before the introduction of the air brake led a so-called "Roll One " by the train, you could stretch by pulling down in each car. Thus, a whistle was thrown to the brakeman on the locomotive. In September 1913, the Cologne Gazette reported the following emergency:

Emergency brake in air brake

Trains of the railway are equipped with an air brake with an integrated air brake line. The brake is released, there is in the air brake line ( main air passage ), a pressure of 5 bar. To initiate a braking operation, the pressure within the brake pipe is lowered at a normal braking bar to 3.5. Upon actuation of an emergency brake, however, the main brake pipe is fully opened by a emergency brake valve at a particular location, so that the pressure drops to normal atmospheric pressure, and a particularly rapid braking is initiated.

Actuating means for initiating an emergency stop (so-called emergency brake lever ) located in each car of a train, in compartment cars in each compartment of a car. In trains with electronically can be determined, which was operated these actuators to train crew goes to the appropriate place and initiates further action. In trains, which do not have such electronic displays, takes place after the initiation of emergency braking by a passenger by the driver a special announcement to the train conductor. In this case, the conductor must first verify on the basis of the control cabinet or display of each car in which the car alarm has been activated, then in the corresponding car review every actuator and then initiate further action.

Emergency brake at electropneumatic brake

Newer railcar or multiple unit trains have direct-acting electro-pneumatic brakes with computers for the emergency brake is performed with an electric wire. From the active cab of a Einspeiseschleife is performed over all coupled train parts to the last unused clutch. The clutch connects the Einspeiseschleife with the trigger loop. This is returned to the active cab and evaluated there. All emergency brakes are in the trigger loop. No signal to the trigger loop is active emergency brake. The triggered Notbremszug is displayed to the train driver.

Emergency brake

Trains that traveled a long tunnel or bridge structures must, these tunnels or bridges can bridge the emergency brake in the area, to allow for leaving the train out of the tunnel or bridge structures. For this purpose, these trains are equipped with a emergency brake with which the driver is able to prevent the emergency brake and the train can leave the tunnel or the bridge structure without stopping. For the emergency stop breakpoints are prepared behind the buildings, where there are escape routes and access roads for emergency personnel.

Right

The German Railway Construction and Operation (EBO ) writes in § 23 paragraph 3: " vehicles in which persons are transported, must have easily visible and accessible emergency handle, can be initiated by the emergency braking. The emergency brake must be such that an initiated emergency brake can be released. In urban rapid rail vehicles, it is acceptable that the operation of a Notbremsgriffes outside of platform areas triggers only an indication to the driver. "

The intentional and not required to operate an emergency brake is in Germany an offense under § 145 of the Criminal Code (abuse of distress and impairment of accident prevention and emergency funds ). Due to the abrupt stop of transport may also be an offense of assault. The resulting costs ( transport loss, injury ) can be provided to the causer.
