Emil Christian Hansen

Emil Christian Hansen ( born May 8, 1842 in Ribe, † August 27, 1909 in Copenhagen) was a Danish botanist with a focus on mycology and plant physiology.

Life

His study of the natural sciences, he financed by writing short stories.

Only later he dealt with microbiological issues of yeast propagation. As an employee of the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen, he discovered that the term yeast various fungal organisms must be understood and that the individual strains can be grown in pure culture. He isolated single cells and increased these droplets cultures in nutrient solutions standardized by budding to Anstellhefen. The yeast described by him for the first time in 1883 was known as Saccharomyces carlsbergensis. Work

Hansen was in the following years his work at the Institute until his death nor known and one of the pioneers in the dairy industry. His second focus was the world's first industrial production of hygienic standard of animal Labs places for cheese making. Following publication of the Thurgauers Rudolf Schatz man he developed this method and presented its products at the dairy exhibition in Gdańsk to the public.

The genus Hansenula, Pichia today classified under, was named after him. His botanical abbreviation is E.C.Hansen.
