Emil Schlagintweit

Emil Schlagintweit (* July 7, 1835 in Munich, † October 20, 1904 in Zweibrücken ) was a German Tibetologist, philologist, orientalist and jurist.

Life

Emil Schlagintweit was the youngest of five sons - Hermann, Adolf, Edward, Robert and Emil - Eye Doctor Joseph Schlagintweit (1791-1854) and Rosalie Seidl ( 1805-1839 ). His particular interest was the Buddhism in Tibet.

Emil made ​​his Abitur in 1853 at Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich.

In 1863 he received a doctorate in law and wrote a seminal work on Buddhism in Tibet ( Buddhism in Tibet, 1863). In 1864 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
