Emil Weyr

Emil Weyr ( born August 31, 1848 in Prague, † 25 January 1894 in Vienna ) was an Austrian mathematician who worked in the field of geometry.

Life

Emil was a son of František Weyr, who was born in 1820 in Náchod and from 1855 was a mathematics teacher at a school in Prague; the other son was Eduard Weyr. He attended secondary school where his father taught, and afterwards studied from 1865 to 1868 at the Czech Polytechnic where he obtained his doctorate at Otto Wilhelm Fiedler 1870. He then became a lecturer at the Charles University in Prague and 1875 to full professor at the University of Vienna.

Work

Together with his brother he was one of the leading representatives of the Austrian School of Geometry and contributed significantly to the spread of geometrical teaching in Austria. He published some 300 works, including The Elements of geometry and projectivischen About the geometry of the ancient Egyptians. Together with Gustav von Escherich he founded the journal Monatshefte for mathematics and physics.
