Émile Léonard Mathieu

Émile Léonard Mathieu ( born May 15, 1835 in Metz, † October 19, 1890 in Nancy) was a French mathematician. He is best known as the discoverer of the first five sporadic groups, which are named after him Mathieu groups.

Life

In 1869, Émile Mathieu was professor of mathematics in 1874 in Besançon and Nancy, where he mainly focused on mathematical physics. In addition to the Mathieu groups he discovered 1860-1873, the Mathieu differential equation is named after him.
