Life

At a young age she began to help the poor. Although Émilie Tavernier felt drawn to the religious life, she married in 1823 the wealthy Jean -Baptiste Gamelin, who supported their works of charity. He died after only four years of marriage. They devoted himself exclusively charitable work in Montreal, first with the Ladies of Charity, and took old women in need at home on. Her first guest was 102 years old, but soon came more. Likewise, she devoted herself to the care of the prisoners. Her work has been getting bigger and she bought bigger houses to accommodate the needy. 1833, during a cholera epidemic, she visited the sick and began to care for orphans. More and more she got help for her charitable work by their former friends from the upper class.

In 1842 the Bishop of Montreal, Ignace Bourget, and the canons and later Bishop Jean- Charles Prince designed a novitiate for women after the model of the Sisters of Charity of Elizabeth Anna Bayley Seton in the United States to the work begun by Émilie Gamelin to secure. Thus, the Congregation of the Sœurs de la Charité de la Providence was founded on 25 March 1843. Seven women who were already working for Émilie Gamelin, were novices. Émilie Gamelin visited Elizabeth Bayley Seton Anna to learn the management of a charitable institution of this kind. On March 30, 1844 was the Mother Superior in Montreal, as all novices took off the perpetual vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.

Émilie Gamelin died during a cholera epidemic in Montreal on 23 September 1851. She was beatified on 7 October 2001 by Pope John Paul II.

Her work spread throughout the world. The Sister Joseph of the Sacred Heart brought the Congregation in 1856 in the United States. In Chile Bernarda Morin founded in 1857 with permission from Montreal an autonomous branch that Congregación de las Hermanas de la Providencia de Chile.
