Emílio Garrastazu Médici

Emilio Garrastazu Médici ( born December 4, 1905 in Baje, Rio Grande do Sul; † 9 October 1985 in Rio de Janeiro) was President of Brazil during the military dictatorship.

Garrastazu Médici was a descendant of a family with Italian and Basque roots. He received his military training in the military academies of Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro; in 1929 he had already brought to the First Lieutenant. When coup of 1930, he mediated between the military and civilian conspirators; in the suppression of the revolution of São Paulo in 1932, he worked in too. Médici enjoyed a steady career and has held high positions in the military administration of General Artur da Costa e Silva, whose close friend he became.

In 1961 he was promoted to brigadier general and in 1964 military attaché at the embassy in the United States.

After General Artur da Costa e Silva became president, Médici became the head of the secret Serviço Nacional de Informações, SNI, appointed. As the Costa e Silva's government came in a government crisis, because the president became seriously ill, the military was looking for three candidates from among its members to follow. These were Médici, Antônio Carlos Murici and Ernesto Geisel.

On October 25, 1969, the National Congress Médici elected president; on October 30, the day he was sworn in, a new Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil came into force, which endowed the president with a very high power. With the help of the secret Médici controlled in consequence, competed which candidates to local elections and ruled otherwise often with the help of decrees. He confirmed the censorship and made opposition to unelectable people. Many of the repressive actions were legitimized with the fight against the growing violence on the part of the urban guerrillas and left-wing extremists; they had, inter alia, foreign diplomats kidnapped. The widespread torture was condemned by the international community.

During the reign Médicis, the Brazilian economy grew very rapidly and inflation declined. This is referred to as the " Brazilian economic miracle."

After the end of his term Médici retired voluntarily from politics.
