Emily Petty-Fitzmaurice, Marchioness of Lansdowne

Emily Jane Mercer Elphinstone Petty - Fitzmaurice, Marchioness of Lansdowne and Lady Nairne 8 ( born May 16, 1819 in Edinburgh, † 26 June 1895 in Meiklour House) was a British Peeress.

Life and career

Born Countess Emily Jane de Flahaut was the eldest daughter of the French statesman Charles Joseph, comte de Flahaut and his wife Margaret. On November 1, 1843, she married Henry Petty - Fitzmaurice, the then heir to the Marquess of Lansdowne the courtesy title Earl of Shelburne led, and could thus Countess of Shelburne call. The couple had three children:

  • Henry Charles Keith Petty - FitzMaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne ( 1845-1927 )
  • Hon Edmond George, later Lord Edmond George, later Baron Fitzmaurice (1846-1935)
  • Lady Emily Louisa Anne († 1939), married Hon Everard Digby ( son of the 9th Baron Digby ) and had a child.

1863 Petty - Fitzmaurice husband inherited when his father died the title of Marquess of Lansdowne, thus it became the Marchioness of Lansdowne. Four years later, Emily Petty - Fitzmaurice inherited even the death of their mother the title of Lady Nairne, 1874, successor by the House of Lords was formally recognized.

When Emily Petty - Fitzmaurice died in 1895, its title was passed on to the eldest son Henry, who then took him as a subordinate item.
