Emmanuel Breuillard

Emmanuel Francois Breuillard ( born June 25, 1977 in Poitiers ) is a French mathematician who deals with groups and combinatorics.

Breuillard studied at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS ) in Paris, the University of Cambridge and Yale University, where he received his doctorate at Gregori Aleksandrovich Margulis 2004 ( Equidistribution of random walks on nilpotent Lie Groups and Homogeneous Spaces ). He is a professor at the University of Paris-Sud.

His research interests are Lie groups and their discrete subgroups, arithmetic groups, geometry and harmonic analysis on groups, combinatorics, ergodic theory and random walks on groups.

In 2012 he was awarded the EMS price. In the eulogy his deep results were highlighted in the asymptotic group theory, in particular its strengthened version of the Tits alternative for linear groups and its investigation of approximate groups (literally approximate groups, a generalization of subgroup concept in combinatorics ), different with a bunch methods that were in combinatorics, group theory, number theory and beyond influential. He collaborated among others with Terence Tao and Ben Green.
