Emperor Shang of Han

Emperor Shang of Han (Traditional汉 殇 帝, Pinyin Hàn ShangDi, W.-G. Han Shang -ti, * Autumn 105; † August or September 106) was the fifth emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty.

Empress Dowager Deng Sui put him on the throne, though he was less than 100 days old and had an older brother, Liu Sheng (刘胜). The Empress Dowager also held the twelve year old Liu Hu (刘 祜) in Luoyang, who ascended the throne as Emperor An to the imminent death of the young Emperor Shang. Empress Dowager Deng Sui also served him as regent.

Family background and ascension to the throne

The then Prinze Liu Long was born in the fall of 105, the son of Emperor He and an unknown concubine. Because Emperor He had lost all the time in his reign his sons by diseases, he let his sons Liu Sheng and Liu Long outside the palace of foster parents raise.

When Emperor He died in 106, his widow called Deng Sui the prince to the capital back. Although Prince Sheng was the elder, but in poor health. Therefore Deng Sui appointed the infant Liu Long crown prince and the same night, yet the Emperor ( Emperor Shang). Empress Deng Sui was Empress Dowager.

Rule

After Liu Long became emperor, his brother Sheng was appointed Prince of Pingyuan. Because the empress mother feared that even Emperor Shang was dying, she called his twelve -year-old cousin Liu Hu to the court in Luoyang, which was considered by many to be the rightful heir to the Han throne.

Because Emperor Shang was still an infant, the real power was in the hands of Deng Sui. Her brother Deng Zhi (邓 骘) became the most powerful officials in the government. It proclaimed a general amnesty to relieve the Dou family.

Emperor Shang died in the year of his accession to the throne. The officials wanted Liu Sheng rise to the emperor, but the emperor's mother was afraid that he harbored a grudge against her because she had first passed over him. She explained why Liu Hu Emperor ( Emperor An).

Because Emperor Shang died so young, he was buried in the grave complex of his father in order to save costs.
