Emperor Tenmu

Temmu (Japanese天 武天皇, Temmu - tennō; * 631, † October 1 686 ) was the traditional count of 40 Tennō Japan. He reigned 672-686 in Asuka- kyō, Yamato. His proper name was Prince Ōama (大海 人 皇子, Ōama no miko ).

He was the second son of Emperor Jomei ( 593-641, Reg 629-641 ) and Empress Kōgyoku (reg. 642-645 ), and the younger brother of Tenji (r. 668-671 ). His Empress Jitō was a daughter of Emperor Tenji, his brother, and thus his niece.

In Jinshin Civil War of 672 Temmu usurped the imperial dignity of the 671 employed Emperor Kobun and ruled the empire from his Kiyomihara - palace.

As emperor he reformed the legal system modeled after the Chinese system. In his reign the reform of kabane ranks for aristocratic dignitaries falls.
