Enchele

The Encheläer (Latin: Encheleae, Greek: Εγχελιοι, translitiert Enchelioi, Albanian: Enkelejtë ), also called " Aalmänner ", were a tribe of the Illyrians, the BC, the region populated by the Lake Ohrid in the 8th and 7th centuries. They were often at war for control of the area with the ancient Macedonians who settled in the east. Around 700 BC, the ancient Macedonians were the subjects Encheläer. They were also the founders of the city Lychnidos ( the predecessor of today's town of Ohrid ) and Enhallon ( missing localization, probably today Struga ). Other neighbors of the Encheläer were the Taulantians, in the north and in the south the Dardanians Dassareten, all Illyrian tribes in the West. After the conquest by the Macedonians the Illyrian Dassareten settled in the area from the south. The dassaretischen kings ruled in Lychnidos.

The Periplus of Pseudo- Skylax mentioned in the 4th century BC, the Encheläer as an Illyrian tribe, who settled on the Adriatic coast ( present-day Albany ). The fact that they settled on the coast 300 years later is explained by the immigration of Dassareten into their territory.

The Encheläer lived from fishing on Lake Ohrid and from trade with Greek goods, as evidenced by archaeological excavations in many cases.
