Encyclopaedia of Islam

The Encyclopaedia of Islam (fr: Encyclopédie de l' Islam) is a recognized reference for Islamic studies and, together with the Encyclopædia Iranica and most recently the Encyclopaedia aethiopica, to meaningful literature of Orientalism.

The articles are written by well-known Islamic scholars from different countries and marked with the name. The Encyclopaedia of Islam was published after the Second World War in its second edition. The first edition in four volumes, also briefly EI1, from the years 1913 to 1938 have appeared in the three languages ​​English, French and German ( Encyclopedia of Islam). At the 21st International Congress of Orientalists in Paris in July 1948, the launch of a new edition, it was decided that only should still appear in English and French. The first volume of the second edition, short EI2, published in 1960, the last volume - No. 12 with supplements - appeared in 2004.
