Endeavour Reef

The Endeavour Reef is part of the Great Barrier Reef off the northeast coast of Australia in the Coral Sea. The coral reef sweeps in east-west direction and is seven kilometers long. The center of the reef is located six kilometers southeast of Hope Island in Hope Islands National Park and twelve kilometers from the mainland. The name of the reef goes back to the shipwreck of James Cook's ship Endeavour in 1770, but was not issued by Cook, but only in retrospect.

On June 11, 1770 at 23:00 clock on Endeavour ran during the peak state of the tide, after about an hour before leaving the Pickersgill Reef north.

The ship threatened to sink the ship and crew escaped to the mouth of the Endeavour River, where they later put the Endeauvour for repair on keel. In order to make the ship afloat again, ballast was thrown overboard, including six guns. In 1969, the guns were discovered. One of them is to visit today after its restoration in the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. The ship repair lasted until August 4, 1770.
