Endpaper

The intent (also: flyleaf or endpapers, formerly Buchbinder leaves) of a book combines the book block, front and rear with the book cover and looks similar to a folded in the middle double page.

Function

The header has the task to connect the binding cover to the book block to the book to stabilize primarily so. But the intent covers the book cover from the inside and protects the first and last page of the book.

Components

A header consists of a centrally folded double sheet. The two halves of the double sheet call themselves Anpappblatt (with attachments with visible Gewebefalz is the mirror ) and flyleaf. The header is in a hand bound book usually held by a narrow hinge, comprising the first arc. Simplified resolutions are connected by a Falzstreifens at the first or last position of the book block. Modern industrial book products, especially the softcover version have, because of the advanced simplification often no more flyleaf.

  • The Anpappblatt is the part of the end paper sheet which is glued to the inner side of the book cover. It is also referred to as a mirror or mirror sheet.
  • As flyleaf is referred to the other half of intent, which is part of the book block.

For specific cover types, there are also different attachment types, which take into account the particularities of the corresponding Binding. So demand jump back book, Franz tape or the Danish millimeters Band for special purpose variants. The above-described dual intent is the intent standard, which is used for most books. As a rule of thumb applies: the bibliophile is a work, the more extensive and the intent is constructed.

The endpapers

When using a book the intent in the fold region is particularly stressed. For this reason, a strong, tear-resistant paper is selected with high opacity for the purpose. Most natural paper or corrugated paper is used, which has a basis weight between 100 and 130 g / m². In some books, the endpapers is printed, for example, geographical maps or other, the book and contents matching images, graphics or drawings. Also a special color can enhance the effect of the resolution and thus the of the book. In the 18th and 19th centuries, often marbled paper, moire papers rarely been used, but which, like other patterned papers today can only be found in particularly high-quality books, mostly bound by hand, using.

Doublure

As Doublure (French:, sub- feed ') is called the decorated inside cover. The lid jewelry is as it were doubled (French: doubler ). In the manufacture of books, the simple mirror is referred to as Doublure.
