Engelbert Arnold

Engelbert Arnold ( born March 7, 1856 in Schlierbach, Canton of Lucerne, † November 16, 1911 in Karlsruhe) was a Swiss electrical engineer. He was the first professor at the Electrotechnical Institute of the Grand Ducal Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe (Department of Power Engineering and Electrical Machines ), which was built in 1896-1898 under his leadership.

Life

He was the son of a farmer, had eight siblings and attended high school in Beromunster. From autumn 1874 to 1878 he studied at the Federal Polytechnic Institute in Zurich, which he left with the diploma of engineer equipment. As a reward, he was allowed to Paris World Exhibition. After brief internships in Leipzig and Offenbach Riga Polytechnic, he became in 1880 assistant of Carl Ludwig Moll. In 1883 he completed his habilitation and became a lecturer in mechanical and electrical engineering. In addition, he founded there around 1888 with the optician Heinrich Dettmann the Russian -Baltic Electrotechnical factory for the construction of dynamos. With his textbook " The armature windings and armature designs of DC dynamos " (Springer, 1896), he gained notoriety. After 1891 Charles Eugene Lancelot Brown had resigned as chief electrician at the Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon, Arnold became his successor. He analyzed and improved the Repulsionsmotor. In 1892 he married Helen Minor, the daughter of Carl Ludwig Moll. Together with her, he lived at the Zurich Weinbergstraße 14, 1899 a daughter was born.

In 1894 he was appointed professor at the Grand Ducal Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe. From 1899 to 1904 he built up the Electrotechnical Laboratory. With his assistant, the Dane Jens Lassen La Cour, he wrote the multi-volume textbook series " The alternating current technology ."

In 1905 he was appointed a Privy Councillor and in 1906 an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Hanover. In Karlsruhe, he became rector in the academic year 1906/1907. In 1911, Arnold Rudolf Richter offered an associate professorship at the Karlsruhe University, but died on November 16, 1911 before he could take up the position. Rudolf Richter took over in 1912 the management of the Electrotechnical Institute as successor by Engelbert Arnold.
