Engelschalk II.

Engelschalk II was the end of the 9th century margrave of the Ostmark.

He was probably a son of the Margrave Wilhelm II or his brother, the Marquis Engelschalk I, however, was not considered as a successor into consideration.

He succeeded, the new Marquis Aribo I. impose a long-standing debate and at times even to oust him, but he had to at least 882, as was I. Aribo used again, admit defeat.

Although Engelschalk was supported by Arnulf of Carinthia, had his opponent, as Arnulf 887 King was his power to the extent established that the new king Aribo confirmed as Margrave and instead dropped Engelschalk.

893 abducted ago Engelschalk then Arnulf illegitimate daughter Ellinrat ( and married her probably will) to reinforce his demands, but then had to flee to Moravia. Although he could then reconcile with Arnulf, but there were 893 in Regensburg to a hearing against Engelschalk, from Arnulf had no knowledge. The trial was initiated by the Bavarian nobility to prevent a particular positioning angel Schalk. He was convicted and blinded.
