ENMASA Beta

The Elizalde Beta ( also known as ENMASA Beta) is an air-cooled nine-cylinder radial engine with turbocharger, built in Spain in the 1940s. With around 775 hp, it was the largest single-row radial engine was ever made ​​in Spain.

Development and application

The engine was based on the American Wright R -1820 engine of the Spanish Elizalde SA developed in Barcelona and used as a replacement motor for the built in the Spanish Civil War aircraft. To use this engine came 52 transport, the CASA C-202 Halcón and the Hispano HA -100 Triana in the Spanish version of the Junkers Ju.

The subsequent designation ENMASA beta got this radial engine because Founded in 1908, private Elizalde SA was nationalized in December 1951 in the Instituto Nacional de Industria INI under the name Empresa Nacional de Motores de Aviación, SA ( ENMASA ) was incorporated.

An engine of this series is now in the Museo de la Ciencia y Técnica de la de Catalunya in Terrassa, Province of Barcelona. In the summer of 1964 was on the military part of the airport Palma de Mallorca a Ju 52 with this engine in use and was in the Spanish Air Force Ejercito del Aire until 1974.
