Enriqueta Basilio

Norma Enriqueta Basilio Sotelo ( born July 15, 1948 in Mexicali ) is a retired Mexican track and field athlete. She lit the Olympic Summer Games 1968, the Olympic flame during the opening ceremony. She was the first woman in Olympic history, which was bestowed this honor.

At the Pan American Games in 1967 in Winnipeg Eriqueta Basilio Sotelo reached seventh place on the 80 - meter hurdles. At the Olympics in her home country she lit the Olympic Flame as the first woman. She started in three contests in their home games. In the sprint hurdles she won with 11.2 seconds in sixth place in their lead, and thus failed to qualify for the next round. About the 400 meters she parted with 55.47 seconds, which ranged for fifth place in its course, also in the first round. Together with Alma Rosa Martínez, Mercedes Román and Esperanza Girón Enrequeta Basilio Sotelo stood as 100 - meter relay. With 47.09 seconds they finished seventh in their lead.

After her athletic career, Basilio Sotelo engaged in politics, and took over for the Partido Revolucionario Institucional political positions. In advance of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, she was the Olympic flame during the torch relay.
