The UCB Institute is home to six and five centers of excellence (which similar institutions work ), and there are other research projects and a number of student initiatives. The campus with eight halls of residence permits life together, learning and working in one place. The Environmental Campus Birkenfeld is supplied as the only German university exclusively with renewable energy such as electricity and heating.

In January 2008 the university was awarded " Selected Landmark 2008 ". History

Military hospital

Near the larger American location Baumholder, the 98th General Hospital in Neubrücke, today a district of the municipality Hoppstädten- Weiersbach was built. The 44 -acre hospital site was opened in 1952 and had 1,000 beds and various medical stations, including surgery, dentistry, orthopedics, radiology, rehabilitation and ophthalmology. From the 1970s to 1984 the hospital was closed for reasons of cost, then it was kept for further use.

The main building complex was on both sides of a comb by a center aisle in east-west direction in the southern appendix there were utilities ( casino, supermarket, cinema, church), in the north, at least in recent years, the dental practice. In the eastern part has a crew's quarters were, to the west in the free-standing buildings, an elementary school and apartment blocks. South at the train tracks, there was Lager-/Güterabfertigungshallen which were used until the 1990s to the closure of the furniture of the hospital.

Interesting are the extensive railway installations for "the army hospital trains". The reaching to the campus by railroad are now removed. The linking of the Mainz and Saarbrücken near- distance railway station lying Neubrücke is, however, in the immediate vicinity. In the same village there was also the Bohemian Airfield, now an airfield with a gliding sports club.

In 1994, the Americans, the hospital finally on, until 1996, were the building empty.

Environmental Campus Birkenfeld

The Environmental Campus Birkenfeld was built on the initiative of the former district administrator of the district of Birkenfeld, Dr. Ernst parts, on the grounds of the former U.S. military hospital. The UCB has become a showpiece conversion project in the Hunsrück, as an abandoned by the American forces land could be used again here. The three founding professors were Michael Eulenstein, Hanns Köhler and Marott Bronder.

The grounds and buildings were renovated or rebuilt in the 1990s. Thus, the location of Birkenfeld University Trier, Environmental Campus Birkenfeld was short ( UCB).

Some American apartment buildings and a primary school were in use until the end of 2009.

The church on the site was further operated until the end of the last century. The cinema complex has been long used as an auditorium with student theater activities, the American retail store existed until 2009. 2010 the complex was demolished to build in the same place a communications building with multi-purpose hall, seminar and band rehearsal rooms and a day care center, which on June 28, 2012 opened. The building at UCB still carry four-digit " American house numbers ".
