Ephraim Katzir

Ephraim Katzir (Hebrew אפרים קציר; actually Ephraim Katchalski; born May 16, 1916 in Kiev, † May 30, 2009 in Rehovot ) was an Israeli scientist ( biophysicist ) and politicians Mapai ( "Israeli Labor Party "). On May 24, 1973 to April 19, 1978 Katzir was the fourth President of Israel.

Katzir was from 1951 to 1973 Head of the biophysical Department of the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot and from 1966 to 1968 chief scientific adviser to the Israeli army.

In 1985, the Japan Prize he was awarded for his achievements in the field of biotechnologies.

He is the brother of Aharon Katzir.
