Ephraim Moses Lilien

Ephraim Moses Lilien (* May 23, 1874 in Drohobicz, Galicia, Austria - Hungary, † July 18, 1925 in Badenweiler, even Ephraim Moses Lilien or אפרים משה בן יעקב הכהן ליליען ) was a Jewish artist who mainly due to his time graphic work in the Art Nouveau drew attention to himself.

The first successes as an artist was able to record lilies after 1897 in the Munich magazine Jugend some of his illustrations were published for the first time. 1899 moved Lily to Berlin, where he successfully established himself as a commercial artist and frequented the circles of Bohème. A friendship connected him with the writer and chanteuse Maria Eichhorn.

With the illustrated and designed book he Judah, a collection of ballads of the non-Jewish poet Borries von Munchausen, lilies 1900 became the " first Zionist artist " and put in the following years his work almost entirely in the service of the Jewish national idea. His work influenced the appearance of the young Zionist movement sustainable. In addition to the invitation card for the 5th Zionist Congress comes among other things, the famous photo of Theodor Herzl on the balcony of the hotel "Three Kings" in Basel of lilies.

Lily became involved in the Democratic- Zionist faction Chaim Weizmann and Martin Buber. In 1902 he was one of the founders of the Jewish publishing house.
