Epiphanios of Vryoula

Metropolitan Epiphanius (* as Constantine Perialas on January 23, 1935 in Ithaca, New York, † May 9, 2011 ) was a Greek Orthodox Archbishop and Metropolitan of Spain and Portugal.

Life

He studied theology and philosophy at the Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts and at Syracuse University. Later he graduated in Educational Management at Harvard Business School and attended Cornell University and Fordham University.

From 1959 to 1984 he worked in various positions in the church. Since 1961, he taught Speech Communication at Ithaca College. After his ordination in 1984 he became pastor of St. Catherine in Ithaca. In 1985 he was appointed Archimandrite. He was pastor of Dormition of the Virgin Mary in St. Clair Shores, Michigan in 1999.

On 12 April 2003, he was elected by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Opel for the first Metropolitan of Spain and Portugal and by Demetrios, Primus of the Orthodox Archdiocese of America and Exarch of the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Opel, appointed Archbishop.

In 2007 he announced his retirement for health reasons known and was appointed titular bishop of Bryoula.
