Pothos ( Epipremnum aureum, Syn: Epipremnum pinnatum (L. ) Engl ' Aureum ', Pothos aureus Linden & André, Scindapsus aureus ( Linden & André ) Engl, Rhaphidophora aurea ( Linden & André ) Birdsey, Epipremnum mooreense Nadeaud ) is a plant belonging to the family of Araceae ( Araceae ). This species was often renamed and is filed under others in the genus Pothos, Rhaphidophora, Scindapsus and Monstera, it is also traded under this name as a houseplant.

Description

The Pothos is a climbing plant that grows up to 20 meters to trees or other supports by means of aerial roots to heights, and thereby developed up to 4 cm thick stem axis. This perennial herbaceous plant is evergreen. The change-constant leaves are stalked and have a heart-shaped leaf blade, completely in young plants, older plants, however irregularly divided, up to 100 cm long and 45 cm wide ( young leaves much smaller, typically less than 20 cm long).

The flowers are formed at an up to 23 cm long piston ( spadix ) with spathe (but they bloom rare).

Use

The Pothos is a popular house plant, some varieties exist with the addition of white, yellow, or light green leaf color. In private and public buildings it is often used because of their low maintenance requirements and the attractive foliage as an ornamental plant. In tropical countries, it is found in many parks and gardens and tends in these countries for naturalizing. It is frost resistant. As a houseplant, the Pothos can grow horizontally or vertically, but must be supported always. The plant thrives in the room even on very shady places where many other houseplants received due to lack of light. The Pothos is usually propagated vegetatively by head or stem cuttings.

In fresh water aquariums, the Pothos is used to improve water quality, by allowing it to take root in the aquarium. You cut off the aquarium water especially phosphates and nitrates. Especially popular the Pothos is also popular with friends terrariums.
