Erchanger, Duke of Swabia

Erchanger, also Erchangar II († executed January 21 917, possibly in Aldingen at Spaichingen ), was Königsbote, Count Palatine of Swabia and 915-917 Duke of Swabia. He was probably a son of the Swabian Count Palatine Berchthold I ( also called Erchanger I. ) (c. 880/892 ) and a daughter of Etichonen Erchanger ( the Younger ) ( † 864 ), Count of Alsace (other sources call Gisela of the East Franks (* 840, † 891 ), daughter of King Ludwig II, as his mother ), and therefore a member of the family of Alaholfinger. His sister, Gwendolyn married Margrave Luitpold of Carinthia and her second husband Konrad I. His brother was Berchthold. Erchangers wife was Bertha († 966 ).

Erchanger was Königsbote and estate manager in Swabia. By the year 911 he and Bishop Solomon III supported. of constancy of common policy interests. Erchanger, but also Burchard I and his son Burchard II desired, after coming to power in Swabia. Erchanger was a major player in the elimination of Burchard I, who was tried and executed 911 of treason. In the year 913, a dispute between Erchanger and King Conrad I broke out. After that Erchanger and Burchard allied against King Conrad I. and defeated it in the Battle of Wahlwies Hegau. Then Erchanger was proclaimed Duke of Swabia.

Because of his offense against the king and the bishop Erchanger was sentenced in September 916 by the Synod of Hohenaltheim to monastery prison. In an attempt to reconcile with King Conrad I, he and his brother were executed on arrival in January 917 at the king's command. Erchangers goods were confiscated, his wife Bertha was allowed to keep their property.
