Erebus (crater)

Erebus is an impact crater on Mars. It has a diameter of 350m and is located on the Meridiani Planum plateau within the MC -19 margaritifer sine degree field. He was visited by the Opportunity rover on its way to the much larger Victoria Crater. Eponym for this crater is the expedition ship HMS Erebus with the James Clark Ross discovered the Ross Ice Shelf. Furthermore, Erebus was the flagship of the lost Franklin expedition.

The rover reached the immediate vicinity of the crater in October 2005 and remained there until March 2006 ( Sol 550 to Sol 750).

The crater is about 2500 meters south of the small Vostok Crater, had examined the opportunity before. On its western side is a flat rock digestion names Payson Ridge and at its northwestern edge a rock digestion of the Olympic Ridge is called. The topography of the crater is referred to by geologists as echted terrain here is relatively flat terrain at the flat rocks an area with dunes surround.
