Erftstraße web should be included in the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr network and run a circulating below the line designation S 18 S -Bahn line of Horrem about Bedburg to Dusseldorf noisy plans of the 1990s (2015 destination network ). This means that the route needs to be expanded and electrified. Furthermore, S 18, the two new breakpoints Neuss Neuss police headquarters and planned Hombroich in implementing the line.

The plans for the S-Bahn extension will no longer be pursued by the authorities responsible for the northern part of the Rhine-Ruhr transport association. The southern part of the route is on the planning of the appropriate transport Rhineland there in a few years ( " time step 2020 ' ) are electrified and connected with a Überwerfungsbauwerk in Horrem to the existing S-Bahn route to Cologne. The NVR 's goal here is to relieve the Cologne Hohenzollern Bridge by elimination of RB 38. For this, the S 12 should depart from Horrem about Erftstraße train to Bedburg, the route Horrem -Düren is taken again from the S13. A feasibility study conducted in 2012 confirms this variant a high Kosten-/Nutzen-Faktor, and part of the costs for the necessary restructuring of the route would have to be invested for the maintenance of the current operation. The RB 38 will end up coming in Bedburg according to this plan of Neuss. Subject to agreement with the VRR to the S-Bahn replace the regional train to Grevenbroich later.
