Ergocalciferol is called a form of vitamin D, vitamin D2. Ergocalciferol is structurally a secosteroid. It was first won in 1922 by Adolf Windaus by photolysis of ergosterol, the elucidation of the structure came in the mid 1930s by Windaus among others.
Taken with food it is, as well as vitamin D3 is converted to calcitriol.
