Eric Hosking

Eric John Hosking OBE ( born October 2, 1909 in London, † 22 February 1991 ) was an English photographer who was best known for his nature photography.

Life and work

Eric Hosking was born in London. Although he developed several new techniques to photograph birds, he was able to sell during the first 10 years of his photographic career will not record. His breakthrough came after it was reported in the media in detail about the attack of a tawny owl on Eric Hosking, in which he lost his left eye. Hoskings most famous recording is Barn Owl with Prey ( Barn owl with prey ) from the year 1934. Published in 1970 his biography An Eye for a Bird ( An eye for a bird ) is the most widely read of his books. Eric Hosking but has written and published a number of other books.

Eric Hosking was chairman of the Nature Photographic Society, Vice- President of the British Ornithologists ' Union and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and Vice President of the Honorary Royal Photographic Society. He was honored by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in 1974 with a gold medal and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1977 for his nature photography and his work in environmental protection.
