Eric Spooner

Eric Sydney Spooner ( born March 2, 1891 in Redfern, New South Wales, Australia, † June 3, 1952 in Sydney, New South Wales) was an Australian politician.

Life

Spooner was born in the former suburb of Sydney, Redfern, and graduated at Christ Church St Laurence School. At 14, he was a messenger and studied at night at the University of Sydney. He graduated from the University with a degree in business and commerce. In December 1919 he married Mary Berry. In 1922 he founded the accounting firm Hungerford, Spooner & Co, together with his brother William, a minister of the Liberal Party of Australia by 1949 to 1964.

Political career

In June 1941, he became Minister for War Organisation of Industry, a position which he retained until the fall of the government Fadden in October 1941. He lost his seat in the election of 1943. 1945 he joined the newly formed Liberal Party of Australia, but was driven almost because of his opinion about the White Australia Policy. In 1946 he ran unsuccessfully against Prime Minister Ben Chifley.
