Erik Hornung

Erik Hornung ( born January 28, 1933, Riga) is a German Egyptologist who is resident in Switzerland.

Biography

Hornung received his doctorate in 1956 at the University of Tübingen and habilitated in 1963 in Münster ( Westphalia). In 1967 he was professor at the University of Basel and was there until his retirement in 1998 Professor of Egyptology. He is also specialized in studies of royal grave texts from the Valley of the Kings and has released publications on the graves KV1 ( Ramses VII ) KV2 ( Ramses IV ) and KV17 ( Seti I ) and KV57 ( Horemheb ). Hornung is known worldwide as the best expert in the necropolis in Western Thebes and is editor of the series The Ancient Orient in the library of the ancient world. He is a member of the German Archaeological Institute.
