Erik Zürcher

Erik Zürcher ( * September 13, 1928 in Utrecht, † 7 February 2008 Warmond ) was a Dutch sinologist.

He was a professor emeritus of East Asian history at the University of Leiden from 1974 to 1990 he was director of the Institute of Chinese Studies here.

He has written important studies of early recording except cultural complex mental models in pre-modern China, in particular to Buddhism, Christianity Ming and the Chinese reception of the Jesuit mission in the 17th century.

He was one of the editors of the Handbook of Oriental Studies.
