Erinnyis

Erinnyis ello

Erinnyis is a genus of butterflies of the family of moth ( Sphingidae ).

Features

The small to medium-sized moths have a very streamlined body with narrow wings and a slim body. The forewings are dark brown, gray and black patterned. The hind wings of most species are conspicuously colored bright orange or yellow. The morphology of the genitalia is similar to that in the genera Pseudomonas Sphinx and Isognathus.

Young caterpillars have a long, slender Analhorn, in the last larval instar the Analhorn is however reduced to a short stub. In most species the caterpillar in the last stage carries on the back of the first abdominal segment a striking red and black eye patch.

The dolls of all types look very similar. They have a glossy black color and strong orange napkins and pattern.

Occurrence and life

The genus is widespread neotropisch. Some species have a large distribution area, ranging for example from South America to the southern United States. In some species, it is known that they carry out long hiking flights, so Erinnyis ello and Erinnyis obscura be separated even detected in Canada. In North America occur in addition to these two species still Erinnyis Alope, Erinnyis lassauxii and Erinnyis Crameri on. Pupation takes place in all species on the ground instead of in a loosely woven cocoon, are incorporated into the plant parts and the like.
