Features

The labial palps of the moth have on the inside of the first segment fine sensory hairs. The males of some species have asymmetrically shaped genitals. Their Valven often have one or more rows of elongated scales. The animals are all well-trained proboscis. In some genera of Choerocampini a structure is the Pilifer, which is derived from the labrum, developed into an ultrasonic receptor.

The caterpillars have a spherical head capsule. Many species carry prominent eyespots on the thorax or, especially on the abdomen. The Analhorn is reduced in many species to an inconspicuous, flat extension.

Way of life

Within the subfamily there are a number of species of moth are unusual diurnal. This includes all Hemaris, most Cephonodes and many Macroglossum species. Among the food crops, a wide range of plants, among other things, to the dogbane family ( Apocynaceae ), arum family belongs ( Araceae ), rose apple family ( Dilleniaceae ), evening primrose family ( Onagraceae ), Rötegewächsen ( Rubiaceae ) and grapevine family ( Vitaceae ) belong.

At rest, large parts or the whole abdomen are uncovered and the inner edge of the front wing is either short of the abdomen, or leaves only a small gap free.

System

The following are the 86 currently the subfamily associated genera according to Kitching / Cadiou be ( 2000), all occurring in Europe, as well as selected listed other species. The species occurring in Europe are marked with " E", each with the country code (A, CH, D) are also found in Central Europe provided.
