Eumorpha

Eumorpha Phorbas

Eumorpha is a genus of butterflies of the family of moth ( Sphingidae ).

Features

The large moths have a stocky build. The forewings have a pattern of browns and blacks that camouflage the moth well on the top. On the underside of the forewing are located at the outer edge of each a dark band. The hind wings are dark eyed, but in some species they carry varying degrees of strong pink shares. Most species have dark triangular spots along the spine, starting at the wing base. The crescent-shaped antennae are short relative to the size of the moths.

The caterpillars have a green, yellow, red or brown color. In the first four stages of their Analhorn is long and filiform, the last stage is reduced to a knubbel shaped elevation. With increasing growth widens the third thoracic segment. In this, the crawler can move her head at fault. The caterpillars of some species vary greatly in their coloration and markings even within the same population. The dolls are colored in Rotbrauntönen, have a smooth surface and a deformed trunk vagina.

Occurrence and life

The genus is widespread neotropisch, but twelve species occur also in North America, of which eight multiply there as well. Where known, the caterpillars of vines plants ( Vitaceae ), dogbane family ( Apocynaceae ) and evening primrose plants feed ( Onagraceae ).
