Xylophanes

Xylophanes anubus Type species of the genus.

Xylophanes is a genus of butterflies of the family of moth ( Sphingidae ).

Features

The moths have a streamlined body with long, thin bodies and narrow wings. The antennae are long, very narrow and sharply curved hook at the end. The genus is probably related due to the morphology of their genitalia closest to the genus Hyles.

The first abdominal segment of the caterpillar is much thickened, forward to the head, the body tapers sharply from there. All previously known caterpillars have a pair of eye-spots on the sides of the first abdominal segment, many species have more eye-spot pairs on the other abdominal segments. All have a well-developed Analhorn. The dolls are clearly marked and have a wide cremaster.

Occurrence and life

Six species of the genus are recorded from North America, three of which are propagated there too. Almost all known food plants of the caterpillars come from the family of Rubiaceae ( Rubiaceae ). The puppets move very active when it interferes. Most species pupate in loosely woven cocoons in the plant parts, etc. are incorporated. The cocoon of Xylophanes falco is large and very strong.
