Perigonia lusca

Perigonia is a genus of butterflies of the family of moth ( Sphingidae ).

Features

The small, mostly brown-colored moths have depending on a varying degrees of yellowish- orange area on the hind wings. In most species the outer edges of the front wings are concave and slightly wavy, they can also be grooved in some species. The body is stocky and stained predominantly dark brown. Only in some species a slightly lightened band is indicated by the third and fourth abdominal segment. The morphology of the genitalia resembles that of the genus Aellopos.

The known caterpillars look very similar and are highly variable and thus easily confused in their coloring.

Occurrence and life

The genus is widespread neotropisch, only Perigonia lusca occurs in North America. Only a few species are known the way of life. The caterpillars of the most studied in this respect species feed on Rötegewächsen ( Rubiaceae ).

Worldwide 15 species of the genus are known, although their taxonomic position within the genus is still partly unclear.
