Euproserpinus

Euproserpinus is a genus of butterflies of the family of moth ( Sphingidae ). The taxonomic position of the genus is still unclear, particularly because many previously in the literature not published species-specific characteristics refer to all individuals of a species, even within a population can be transferred. The genus is closely related to the genus Proserpinus.

Features

The small butterflies are black, gray and white colored. The genus differs from Proserpinus by the presence of pulvillus and paronychium and the first Tarsenglied the front legs has no spurs. Males and females do not differ in coloration and patterning. The antennae of the males are over their entire length almost equal thickness that the females are filiform and tapered at the last third of their peak.

Occurrence and life

The genus is widespread in the south western United States to northern Mexico. The adults are diurnal. Bask usually before the first flight at start of day to increase their body temperature. The caterpillars feed on evening primrose family ( Onagraceae ), caterpillars in the last stage but also to Compositae ( Asteraceae) are occasionally encountered. Pupation takes place in a shallow chamber in the ground.

System

Worldwide three species of the genus are known:

  • Euproserpinus euterpe Edwards, 1888
