Erkki Salmenhaara

Erkki Olavi Salmenhaara ( born March 12, 1941 in Helsinki, † March 19, 2002 ) was a Finnish composer and musicologist.

Salmenhaara studied at the Conservatory of Helsinki in Joonas Kokkonen and 1963 some months in Vienna with György Ligeti. There he studied musicology, aesthetics and philosophy, graduating with a thesis on the music of Ligeti in 1970, at the University of Helsinki, where he worked since 1975 as an assistant professor since 1966 as a teacher.

From 1963 to 1973 he was music critic for the Helsingin Sanomat. From 1969 he was vice-president of the Finnish Musicological Society, 1974-1976 President of the Finnish Composers' Association and from 1974 to 1978 president of the Finnish Symphony Orchestra Association.

Salmenhaara are biographies Jean Sibelius ' and Leevi Madetojas, commentaries on the works of Ligeti and Brahms and Sibelius tone poem Tapiola, writings on music of the 20th century, contributions to the lexicon of Finnish music history and a textbook of music theory.

He composed five symphonies and a symphonic poem, four elegies for chamber orchestra, chamber music, piano pieces, cantatas, choral works, songs and pieces for electronic instruments.
