Ernest Besnier

Ernest Henri Besnier (* April 21, 1831 in Honfleur, Normandy, France, † May 15, 1909 in Paris) was a French dermatologist and medical director of the Hôpital St. Louis in Paris.

He led in the hospital a histopathology and parasitology, and invented the technique of biopsy. He first described the chronic skin lesions of sarcoidosis and coined the term lupus pernio.

Besnier described in 1892 as atopic dermatitis eczema with itching associated disease ( dermatitis multiformis prurignosa ). Therefore, the disease was referred to the 20th century with prurigo Besnier. He realized for the first time the connection between the atopischesn eczema with asthma and hay fever, described the itching as the main symptom and recognized the diversity of skin lesions.

Together with Pierre Adolphe Adrien Doyon (1827-1907), he founded the journal Annales de dermatologie et de syphiligraphie.
