Ernest Callenbach

Call Ernest Bach ( born April 3, 1929 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, † April 16, 2012 in Berkeley, California ) was an American writer, journalist and university teacher.

Life

Call Bach is regarded as an environmental pioneer. Call Bach had studied at the University of Chicago and the Sorbonne in Paris and holds a master's degree in English and communication. He taught film history and film theory at the University of California at Berkeley. Until 1991 he was editor of the magazine "Film Quarterly".

Callbach counted alongside Ursula K. Le Guin and Marge Piercy one of the current Gesellschaftsutopisten the present and as such is sometimes mentioned in the same breath as HG Wells, Aldous Huxley and George Orwell. He last lived in Berkeley ( California).

The Albert -Ludwigs- University of Freiburg lent Callbach 2009, the honorary doctorate.

Novel " Ecotopia "

1975 designed Callbach with his novel " Ecotopia " ( German: Ökotopia ) the model of a society which organizes itself ecologically and socially compatible. The country " Ecotopia " is formed by three former U.S. states that have split off from the United States. Callbach great detail describes all possible sub-areas of social, economic, political and private life. Call Bach's utopia was " multicultural, technologically gently, dezentralistisch, female friendly, hierarchiearm (but not hierarchical, ) ', the social scientist and writer Rolf Schwendter. The New York Times describes the society described in Ecotopia as " a mixture of Scandinavian socialism and nordkalifonornischem Back - to - the - land ideas with the usage ... to eat locally grown products."

Critics such as the left journalist Peter Biene accuse Callbach, " Ecotopia " contains " a crude mixture of emancipatory and right ideas ."

After more than twenty rejections of the manuscript by various publishing houses Callbach founded specifically the Banyan Tree Publishing and brought the book out there. Later, Bantam Books was interested in it and provided with a separate output for further dissemination.
